How many relationships have had an unhappy ending just because one partner snores loudly enough to keep their beloved one wide awake all night suffering little to no and unbroken sleep?
All that digging in with the elbows, the kicking of the feet, the kneeing of the back brings no relief but further frustration to the affected partner. The snoring partner does not understand why in the morning they are receiving a cold welcome and puts it down to YOU as the one with the problem.
The unfortunate thing is though, that there are simple techniques that can reduce your partners loud snoring that are not readily known.
Let's first look at what actually causes snoring.
During the day your alert and making your way throughout the day. Your muscles are firm and ready for action. The throat muscles hold everything in place and you do not snore.
At the back of your mouth after the hard bit, there is fleshy tissue that is soft and smooth. This tissue is known as the pallet of the throat and extends from the roof of your mouth down the back of your throat.
When you fall asleep, your muscles relax and they relax your throat muscles as well. This causes the pallet to drop downwards a short distance.
The tongue relaxes and this too, falls backwards into your throat.
What we now have is the coming together of two very soft pallable pieces of flesh causing a narrowing of the airway.
Let's now take this one step further. When we breath we breath in the equivalent of litres and litres of air. As our body relaxes we breath deeper causing larger volumes of air to enter our bodies.
All of this air is trying to get past two pieces of soft flesh that has effectively narrowed a once wide opened airway. The ensuing passage of the air causes vibrations between the two pieces of flesh, the pallet and tongue, that causes the noise known as snoring.
The narrower the passageway, the more soft tissue in the throat, the deeper the breaths determines the level of snoring.
Some snoring is the sweet sound of a summers breeze over a still lake, while other snoring can drown out the sound of an aircraft carriers engine room.
What is the technique I hear you ask? It's simple, if the tongue falls backwards while we sleep then add an additional pillow to hold the head up where the tongue naturally falls into place unblocking the airways.
