Valerian is one of the well known and best researched herbal sleep aid. Usually, valerian is taken an hour before bedtime and it takes about two to three weeks to work.

The calming and relaxing effects of lavender flowers and their essential oil also have more scientific evidence to back them than any other herb. Usually, dosages include one to two teaspoons of the dried flowers made into tea a sweetener can be used to make the tea more palatable, or one to four drops of the oil taken with a sugar cube.

Another widely recommended herb is lemon balm; it consists of the freshly dried leaves of the lemon balm plant and a member of the mint family. By soaking one to two grams of dried leaves in a cup of hot water for five to ten minutes, an average dose for tea is achieved.

Hops are also widely used for people with sleeping problems. Dried fruits of hops are sometimes used to stuff pillows to help people fall to sleep. It is used to treat restlessness, anxiety and sleep disturbances. To make a tea, use around one heaping teaspoonful of whole hops and then steep in a cup of hot water for about ten to fifteen minutes.
