Natural Skin Care With Sweet Almond Oil

By: Laura Thomas

Sweet almond oil could almost have been made by nature specifically as a natural skin care product. However, before we discuss this oil in particular, why should you use natural products to care for your skin? What is wrong with the thousands of commercial products out there on the pharmacy and supermarket shelves?

To answer this question, you should consider what your skin is. Many people forget, or don't even realize, that their skin is not just an outside body covering that you can decorate and abuse in any way you want. It is a major organ of your body, and is, in fact, the heaviest organ by weight, and also the largest by surface area. This is a biological fact that no biologist would argue against.

Your skin does many things for you. It breathes and easily absorbs other substances. Its sweat prevents you from overheating, and also allows the excretion of toxic substances from your body. The sebaceous glands lubricate your skin and hair, keeping your hair nice and shiny. It also protects your skin from the effects of harsh chemicals that can cause dermatitis.

Your skin bacteria protect you against the bad germs that can make you very ill if they penetrate the skin, and there are several more properties that your skin possesses to keep you well and young looking. It is a living, breathing organ, and has to be looked after.

While many synthetic skin preparations might do your skin no harm, there are just as many that will. A good rule of thumb is if you can't spell an ingredient, then don't use it! If you don't know what you are putting on your skin then don't do it. Read the labels because many skin care lotions, oils and butters contain harsh synthetic chemicals designed to emulsify the oil with water to make a cream, or to help it spread over your skin, or to help it penetrate right into the lower layers of your skin.

Substances such as lauryl or laureth sulfates, mineral oils and hydrogenated lecithin can cause problems. Ethanolamine, lactic acid and disodium EDTA should be completely avoided. If you see propylene glycol (antifreeze) in the ingredients list, this penetrates the skin membrane and in so doing opens it for infiltration by other toxic substances that your skin is designed to repel.

These are just a very few of the horribles that many commercial skin care preparations contain. Not all of them, by any means, but still far too many. Sweet almond oil contains no added chemicals, and is a 100% natural skin care product. It is one of many natural oils that you can safely use on your skin without having to worry about understanding an ingredients list.

It is not only chemicals you have to worry about with synthetic products. Some contain substances such as collagen that are extracted from animal body parts such as their skin. Chicken feet are another favored source of collagen.

Sweet almond oil contains the antioxidant Vitamins A and E, and also some Vitamin B. Antioxidants help to keep your skin looking fresh and youthful by protecting it from the free radicals that modern pollution produces in very large numbers. So do tobacco smoke and pesticides, and also harsh sunlight. The Omega 3 fatty acids also protect your skin, and the oil is overall an extremely beneficial natural skin care product.

So next time you are out shopping for a skin cream or oil, have a close look at the labels. Don't assume that if it has a fancy scientific name it must be good for you - the reverse is very frequently the case. Go instead for a natural oil or butter, and sweet almond oil is very safe and very gentle on your skin, while helping to keep it smooth and supple, and to keep it looking healthy and young.
