Dyslexia can be one of the most
frustrating things to deal with in adulthood. While dyslexia torments
and greatly frustrates the people that suffer with it, employers and
those that live with the dyslexic are equally frustrated because of the
way the dyslexic mind flip flops much of the information the dyslexic
comes in contact with. Instead, like so many school aged children
suffering from dyslexia, I was pinpointed as a "trouble maker" despite
the fact that I was never sent to the Principal's office, or caused
classroom disruptions.
As though adulthood is not difficult
enough, dyslexia adds a dimension of complexity to the lives of those
who suffer with it. Later on, I got a job working for a politician
writing letters for him to constituents.
Public Speaking
However, what these individuals do not
realize is the simple act of switching pronouns when speaking with
another individual can make you seem uneducated, unreliable and possibly
confused.
Let this be a lesson to you. If you are
just realizing this is a problem, there are a few tools I can give you
to help you combat this embarrassing issue. This could be the difference
between a promotion, or your continued work at a dead end job.
Verb Agreements
Part of being a dyslexic who has
learned to live with this means you constantly think about what you are
saying and writing and correcting yourself whenever you notice a
problem. This can be quite embarrassing in front of an employer or
someone you are trying to impress with your knowledge or excellent
vocabulary skills.
So, this previous sentence is an
example of a "dyslexic" moment, and unfortunately, a great example of
how you would demonstrate to the person you are speaking with that you
do not understand verb agreement.
Writing
When writing letters, papers or memos,
the same holds true. This will help you communicate with the world
immensely. E-mail can also be the easiest way for you to communicate.
Taking Standardized Tests
