Selecting the best hair shampoo for your hair is not as hard as it may seem. As a hair products manufacturer, we receive hundreds of phone calls each week asking advice on what hair products to use. The starting place - what is your hair type and do you have any problems or changes to you would like see with your hair.
Why do we start there? Well, hair shampoo is often organized or categorized by what it does to or for the hair. We often see function or active ingredients formulated to help:
- Faster hair growth
- Increased moisture
- Reduced breaking and added strength
- Color retention
- Increased body and control
Knowing what customers want to do or "fix" allows us to narrow the shampoo options that are available.
Most customers need or want increased moisture. Lack of moisture is probably the leading cause of damage. Styling aids such as hair dryers, flat irons or curling irons can deplete moisture which break-down protein and amino acid bonds. This increase frizziness and fly-away hair and can lead to temporary damage. Lack of moisture also results in poor control and styling flexibility and can leave thin or thinning hair lifeless.
Hair shampoo with silk protein and vitamins as added ingredients help maintain protein bonds and improve strength. Black and African American hair are particularly prone to breakage due to lack of moisture and adequate vitamins and minerals delivered to the cuticle and follicle shaft.
