1. Pour commercial drain cleaner into
the clogged drain. This is the most common but least effective way
to unclog a drain. It is easy for the home-owner becaue with this method
all you do is pour a thick liquid into the sink and allow the liquid to
slowly drain. The liquid acts as as an acid and breaks down any
blockages in the drain. The entire process may take anywhere from 15
minutes to many hours depending on the severity of the clog and the
strength of the drain cleaner. This method is good when dealing with
minor clogs especially since it requires very little work on the part of
the home-owner.
2. Clean the U-trap. Beneath the
sink, you will find a u-trap which is connected to both the main waste
water line and the sink. The u-trap is commonly connected to the main
drain from the sink and then to the second drain pipe that usually runs
into the floor or wall. Most u-trap's have a threaded connection to both
pipes. This means that it can be unscrewed on both ends and removed.
However, before doing this you should be sure to place a bucket
underneath the u-trap that will catch the water sitting in the upper
pipes. After removing the u-trap you will be able to clean out the trap
by hand. Be prepared for a foul odor and if you are squeamish you may
want to use a coat hanger to do the cleaning. Clogs in the u-trap
usually smell awful and if you have a weak stomach you may want to wear
a mask as well. Once the u-trap has been cleaned you can reconnect it to
both pipes by screwing the threaded end onto each piece.
Test your sink by turning on the water.
If you don't have any leaks, you can give yourself a pat on the back
because you have just fixed the clog in your bathroom sink.
