From Wikipedia,
the free encyclopedia The cost of
the damage was about 18 billion dollars which Bangladesh could not afford.
It submurged 100,000km2 of land. It lasted for more than 65 days. 16,000 km
of road was damaged, 6,000 km of embankments were damaged as well as 600km2
of crops were also damaged.(1998 flood)
Bangladesh, situated at the confluence of several of South Asia's major
rivers, suffers from floods almost every day. Major portions of the country
are part of the Ganges Delta, the largest flood plain in the world. Each
year in Bangladesh about 26,000km2, (around 18%) of the country is
flooded,so far killing over 5000 people and destroying 7 million homes.
During severe floods, the affected area may exceed 55% of the FLOODS and the
Meghna. This volume is 95% of the total annual inflow. By comparison only
about 187,000 million m3, of streamflow is generated by rainfall inside the
country during the same period. The floods have caused havoc in Bangladesh
throughout history, especially during the years 1966, 1987, and 1988. The
2007 South Asian floods affected a large portion of Bangladesh.Over half the
country is less than 1m above sea level.aa
Floods in Bangladesh can be divided into three categories: *[[Monsoon]]
flood - seasonal, increases slowly and decreases slowly, inundates vast
areas and causes huge losses to life and property; *Flash flood - water
increases and decreases suddenly, generally happens in the valleys of the
hilly areas; and
Tidal flood - short duration, height is generally 3m to 6m, blocks inland
flood drainage. |
