Auto Trader is an automotive
sales website and classified magazine located in many countries, and is
owned by the Trader Media Group. It began as a print publication in the UK
in 1977, and has since expanded into the Republic of Ireland, Netherlands,
Italy, Malaysia, South Africa, Canada, and the U.S.
Separate magazines are published by regions, as designated by the company.
An advertisement is generally shown in both the magazine and the website.
The website allows users to search for private and trade advertisements for
used cars by proximity to a UK postcode.
The founder of Auto Trader in the UK was John Madejski, who went on to take
over Reading Football Club in 1991. The Founder of Auto Trader (Trader
Publishing) in the USA was Stuart W. Arnold. Auto Trader was started by
Arnold in the state of Florida, then went nationwide. The company was sold
to Guardian Media Group in 1998.
Auto Trader is also a Canadian Leader in print and online automotive
classifieds. Titles include Auto Trader, Truck Trader, Bike, Boat & RV
Trader, Heavy Equipment Trader, and many more. The website Autotrader.ca has
local content in every province and a French equivalent site called
Autohebdo.net. The website and the publications allow users to search
private and professional content.
History: Auto Trader is a division of Trader Corporation, the Canadian
leader in print and online* vertical media. The company was formed in June
2006 with the integration of Classified Media (Canada) Holdings Inc. (Trader
Canada) and Trader Media Corporation (TMC). TMC was Ontario’s leading
publisher of classified advertising publications and Web sites. The TMC
business began in 1975 and expanded through acquisitions and strong internal
growth. TMC’s brands included Auto Trader™, Ontario’s largest source of used
vehicle photo-classified advertising, as well as Renters News™, Resale
Homes™ and New Homes & Condos™, the leading guides to housing in the major
Ontario markets.
