"Obviously the new flights will increase
tourism to the areas benefiting directly from the expansion. There will
be an obvious increase in the availability of cheap flights to those
locations. But it will also indirectly affect those areas and all of
Turkey's tourism industry, because the more tourists Turkey welcomes,
the more it will welcome. Word of mouth is Turkey's most successful
marketing arm," he said.
The expansion consists of 17 new
flights per week from the UK, including: London to Istanbul, Bodrum,
Dalaman; Manchester to Antalya and Dalaman and Birmingham to Antalya and
Bodrum.
According to the Association for
British Travel Agents tourism from Britain to Turkey has been growing at
an average of 20% per year for the last 5 years, and they forecast it
would accelerate to a growth of 25% this year, because of the strong
Euro.
According to recent reports their
forecasts are being proven correct. The number of British visitors to
Istanbul alone has increased 23% according to recent tourism ministry
data. The Pegasus airline alone has more than doubled passengers from
the UK from 100,154 in 2008 to 213,136 in the first 10 months of this
year. Unfortunately the tourism ministry has registered an 11% growth in
British visitor numbers in the first 10 months, somewhat short of ABTAs
forecast but still very impressive.
Little wonder then that the Pegasus
announcement is the 3rd announcement of major expansions in flight
numbers between the UK and Turkey, in almost as many months. The
continued expansion of Turkish tourism, which is both testified to, and
boosted by each new flight, can only be good news for Turkish property.
Turkey received 28million+ tourists in
2008, and this has made it incredibly popular with the new wave of
overseas property buyers, who have been active since economic conditions
began improving around the world in April.
